Are you planning for a career as correction officer? Once you are hired, you will undergo training before you can start working in the facility. The training happens at the nearest police academy or the staff training academy in the designated center (Glynco, Georgia). After the training, you may choose to work at a Federal level, and then the training becomes longer and intensive.

Training on Corrections

Knowing About Rights of Inmates

During the training, you will learn about the rights that the inmates have and how to make sure that you are not infringing those rights. You will also know how to provide the directions without violating the rights. You will also learn how to report any violations.

Use of Firearm & Safety

While on the job you may be carrying firearms as well. In training, you will learn about various kinds of firearms that you may encounter. Then you will learn how to use them safely and also which type of firearm that you need to carry. You will be spending time on the firing range while you are getting the training. You will also learn about how to best care for your weapon.

Learning about Self Defense

Once you are on the job, there may be instances of physical assault form an inmate. The training will equip with practical maneuvers that you may use in the event of a physical assault. Leaning to defend yourself and taking down the assailant quickly and efficiently is what you will learn in training.

Learning to Transport Prisoners

Inmates may have to be transported from one area to another. During training, you will also learn about transporting prisoners what should you be doing when the inmate tries to flee. You will learn about proper procedures for transportation to and from the correctional facility. It will also include the way to transport an inmate by a vehicle.

Daily Procedures

The training also focuses on rules and procedures that you must follow regularly. It includes:

  • Searching an area or an inmate
  • Intake process
  • Release of inmates

Besides, you will also learn what needs to be done in case of a crackdown, intimate fight an inmate escape. You will also be trained in recognizing an inmate who is attempting to deceive or manipulate you or a fellow officer.

Once you have attended the training and knowledge about the corrections reporting solutions, you will become a professional correction officer and will be able to render your duties fairly.
